It's fair to say it hasn't been a "classic" start to the summer holidays! Colder and wetter with warm sunny days few and far between. The upside is that those local "hot spots" aren't so popular on the cooler days, allowing us to enjoy some quiet creativity at locations that would otherwise be heaving at this time of year.
For those natural treasure hunters, now is the time to catch the all-too-fleeting heather in bloom shots as the vivid pink magentas fast approach their peak. If the midges are playing havoc with your enjoyment (as well as appearing like dust spots on your sensor) try and seek out a more exposed area of moorland, where they'll be less imposing.
Whatever direction you turn your lens to this August I wish you many happy hours of undisturbed photography!

Local Travel Photography Sometimes it can be tempting to only get the camera out for those exciting trips but this can be a mistake. Looking for photo opportunities in everyday experiences helps build up your confidence and improves muscle memory with your camera settings. Not only keeping you "match fit" for those more special trips but also creating opportunities to capture really special photos that only local knowledge could achieve!
Flutterby Season It might already be too late for spotting species like orange tips but August is a top month for watching and photographing butterflies. Finding a patch of buddleia (aka butterfly bush) on a warm, sunny day can produce not only good numbers but a variety of species! Pro Tip: Use colourful flowers in the foreground and a shallow depth of field (low f number) to help highlight and frame your subject.
